Use this resource to support the implementation of existing High-Quality Instructional Resources (HQIRs) adopted by school districts as well as educators teaching in districts that have not yet adopted an HQIR in mathematics. The examples and instructional resources should not replace adopted HQIR but should serve to supplement instruction towards the full depth and complexity of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Mathematics.
Educators in schools/districts with adopted HQIRs should look to that HQIR as a starting point for the Roadmap with an array of pedagogical supports to help meet the needs of all learners. The Roadmap then becomes a place to collect those supports that align with the instructional vision for this specific learning experience. For those using an HQIR, this Roadmap might serve more to support the intellectual prep that goes into a lesson, rather than as a tool for instructional planning.
For more information regarding high-quality mathematics curricula, districts and school leaders may access the Mathematics Instructional Resources Consumer Guide, a tool for evaluating and selecting instructional resources for alignment to the KAS for Mathematics.
Roadmap to Implementing High-Quality Mathematics Instruction Sample Library
These Roadmaps are designed around KY.6.G.2 and the Three-Act Task: Girl Scout Cookies. The Roadmap in Version 1 lifts up Effective Mathematics Teaching Practice 2: Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving, supported by developing student self-management. The Roadmap in Version 2 amplifies Effective Mathematics Teaching Practice 4: Facilitate meaningful mathematics discourse, supported by developing student relationship skills.
This Roadmap is designed around KY.HS.SP.6 and a task from YouCubed relating to Data Science. This task is also featured in the KDE’s Writing for Publication in Mathematics resource. This Roadmap lifts up Effective Mathematics Teaching Practice 2: Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving, supported by developing responsible decision-making with students.
