The goal of close reading is to enable students to deeply engage with challenging and high-quality texts. It involves rereading a grade-level, complex text multiple times with varied purposes which may include but are not limited to answering text-dependent questions, acquiring vocabulary, and increasing fluency. This interactive professional learning module helps teachers plan for strong literacy instruction, especially when a green-rated high-quality instructional resource (HQIR) is not being utilized. Use the “next” button to move through the course. When you have completed this module, please fill out this survey to provide valuable feedback as well as to receive a link to your certificate of completion which can be submitted to your district for PD or EILA credit.

If you have a green-rated high-quality instructional resource (HQIR), close reading is likely embedded as an effective strategy throughout. Utilizing the Text Talk Protocol may be more beneficial than engaging with this Close Reading module. The Text Talk Protocol  is designed to help educators hold “text talks” with each other that deepen understanding of a text’s complexity and of its layers of meaning—its big ideas/themes, issues and questions all before reading the text with students. These deeper understandings allow educators to leverage the authentic connections HQIRs make available between what is teachable in a text and the Kentucky Academic Standards for Reading and Writing.
