KDE Hosts Community Based Educator Day of Science Learning

In January, participants from across the state and from a variety of industries joined the Kentucky Department of Education’s Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) science consultants for an exciting professional learning session inspired by United We Learn, Kentucky’s vision for the future of public education. This event focused on how community partners can collaborate with educators and district leaders to support schools, enhance student experiences and foster innovation.

Participants deepened their understanding of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Science and explored strategies for building stronger partnerships with districts and schools. Led by OTL science consultants, the day focused on key shifts in the science standards, including phenomenon and problem-based learning, three-dimensional teaching, and sensemaking. Through collaborative activities and shared experiences, participants gained insights on how to support high-quality science instruction and strengthen connections between schools, districts and community partners. Additionally, participants explored OTL’s new resource, The Kentucky Atlas of Phenomena (KAP), and discovered ways to contribute to this growing collection of locally relevant phenomena.

They also heard from a panel of educators about their work with community partners and the impact it had on their students. Panelists shared their experiences on how collaboration with local organizations provided valuable, standards-aligned learning opportunities, whether through classroom support, professional development, or funding for resources.
