Vibrant Learning Experiences in Science and Social Studies: NEW Professional Learning Module Series is now available!
Many teachers are already using knowledge-building, high-quality instructional resources (HQIRs) for reading and writing instruction. While knowledge-building resources may provide texts related to science and social studies topics, this is not sufficient to address the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Science and the KAS for Social Studies.
In this new professional learning module series, Vibrant Learning Experiences in Science and Social Studies, participants will explore how teaching elementary science and social studies anchored in an HQIR for reading and writing can provide deeper learning opportunities for students in an authentic context. These module sessions will demonstrate the importance of going beyond reading about science and social studies topics to “doing” science and social studies in the classroom.
The Goals of this Module are to:
- Investigate the current landscape of science and social studies instruction in elementary schools;
- Discover compelling reasons to teach science and social studies in elementary school;
- Engage in a vibrant, standards-aligned science and social studies experience that connects to topics from HQIRs in reading and writing; and
- Plan for vibrant, standards-aligned instruction in science and social studies that connects to topics from HQIRs in reading and writing.
