The Kentucky Atlas of Phenomena (KAP) has been updated with new phenomenon bundles, expanding this valuable resource for science educators across the Commonwealth. Developed by Kentucky educators and community partners, KAP helps bring science to life through locally relevant phenomena that connect directly to the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Science. The site offers varying levels of phenomena connected to disciplinary core ideas, making it easy for teachers to explore, understand and apply science standards using real-world examples from Kentucky.

Using local phenomena in science instruction is more than just engaging; it makes learning meaningful and memorable for students by rooting abstract concepts in their own lived experiences. Therefore, the KAP may be used to support localizing the phenomenon addressed in adopted high-quality instructional resources (HQIR). This smart adjustment will help students relate to the anchoring phenomena through a local context.  Whether looking to deepen content knowledge, strengthen use of HQIRs or find inspiration in one’s local landscape, the KAP is a powerful tool for making science relevant and rigorous.
