Text-Based Writing Across Disciplines, is a self-paced, high-quality professional learning course on the KYLearningHub, developed by program consultants representing five content areas and disciplines within the Division of Program Standards. This course will help educators understand how text-based writing strengthens reading, deepens content knowledge and supports learning in all content areas, including Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Visual and Performing Arts as well as Reading and Writing.

This asynchronous course is designed to show how to intentionally create opportunities for students to engage in discipline-specific literacy practices. These practices use reading and writing skills specific to each discipline to learn content knowledge, demonstrate content knowledge and publish learning.  Objectives include:

  • Explain the role of text-based writing across disciplines, or content areas;
  • Distinguish between the three types of writing present in all disciplines; and
  • Apply discipline-specific writing strategies.

This self-paced course allows individuals to earn two (2) hours of professional learning credit, if approved by the local district.
