The beginning of the school year is a great time to revisit the KAS for Science: An Overview Module. This module helps teachers build a deeper understanding of the KAS for Science, providing the foundation needed to effectively use High- Quality Instructional Resources (HQIRs). Whether you’re onboarding teachers who are new to your school, district, or Kentucky or supporting experienced educators, this module is a valuable professional learning resource.

Developing a deeper understanding of the KAS for Science helps teachers internalize the grade-level expectations that drive the design of their adopted HQIR, leading to stronger implementation of each unit. This grounding matters: Teachers make dozens of in-the-moment decisions every day that no resource can anticipate, and a clear picture of the standards helps them recognize where students are in their learning in real time. It also supports genuine three-dimensional learning, helping teachers see how disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts connect beyond what’s explicitly written into every page of the materials. Over time, this shared grounding reinforces ongoing implementation with integrity and builds the kind of professional confidence that comes from understanding the “why” behind instructional choices.

The module includes:

  • A facilitator’s guide to walk your team through the session;
  • The full overview presentation; and
  • A “module at a glance” summary for quick reference or agenda planning.

This resource works well for professional development days, professional learning community (PLC) meetings or new-teacher orientation sessions. Getting everyone grounded in the standards now sets up greater instructional alignment and coherence throughout the year.

Access the resources on the Science Professional Learning Modules webpage.
