The Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Reading and Writing outlines text-based and evidence-based writing as communication tasks that students should engage in. Effective Communicator: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning introduces a collection of quick guides to support teachers to use coherent language and instructional support to integrate strong reading and writing instruction. Teaching students to develop strong claims, support them with relevant evidence, and explain their thinking through logical reasoning reflects evidence-based writing instruction. Practices such as explicit writing instruction, scaffolded support, and opportunities for application and practice are highlighted in the instructional overviews to connect research to effective reading and writing instruction. Embedded links demonstrate connections to High-Quality Instructional Resources (HQIRs).
