Supporting End-of-Year Step-backs for HQIR Implementation
End-of-year step-backs are designed to support district and school leadership teams as they examine progress towards their high-quality instructional resource (HQIR) implementation goals, identify key successes, learn from and solve significant challenges and make adjustments for the next year. These more formal step-backs typically include:
- Analyzing summative data and data not available during the school year;
- Reflecting on areas of improvement identified throughout the school year;
- Examining systems and structures used to support implementation;
- Identifying 2-3 areas of improvement for the upcoming school year; and
- Communicating areas of improvement and celebrating successes with stakeholders.
The following KDE tools are designed to support districts in conducting an end-of-year step-back:
- Sample End-of-Year Step-back Data Gathering Template – provides a template for organizing data and feedback for quarterly step-backs.
- End-of-year Step-back Agenda – provides goals and a sample agenda for a Quarterly Step-back Meeting.
- Curriculum Implementation Framework – outlines key responsibilities broken down by role group for each stage of curriculum implementation.
For more information on HQIR implementation and how these resources can be used together year-over-year to drive continuous improvement in instruction, the student experience and student outcomes, the KDE has developed the Continuous Improvement Playbook for Curriculum Implementation. This new resource:
- Provides a sequence of eight action steps to be taken each year;
- Pairs the eight action steps with associated resources and tools; and
- Maintains a consistent sequence of steps across the stages of implementation.
