Holocaust Education Webinar: Using Historical Newspapers as Primary Sources in Social Studies and ELA

Holocaust Education Webinar: Using Historical Newspapers as Primary Sources in Social Studies and ELA

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has collaborated with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) to showcase what a Holocaust education learning experience aligned to the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies and the KAS for Reading and Writing looks like in practice. This webinar is designed to deepen participants’ Holocaust education content knowledge and pedagogy.

In this presentation, representatives from the KDE will support ELA and social studies teachers in understanding alignment to social studies and reading and writing standards. Then, representatives from the USHMM will engage participants in a sample learning experience using their resources. This learning experience is designed for participants’ use in their own classrooms with their students. Webinar participants are asked to engage in vibrant, inquiry-based learning symmetrical to what is intended for the student experience while also reflecting on their practice as teachers.

This webinar will take place on Wednesday, May 14, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. ET. Please complete the Holocaust Education Webinar form to register. Since this webinar is designed to be interactive and symmetrical to the student’s learning experience, we encourage you to attend the session live. Depending on district policies and if approved at the local level, participants may receive 1.5 hours of professional development credit for their participation in the workshop. Please work with your district or principal to determine if these hours are eligible. A recording will be available on kystandards.org after the event.

This webinar is part of the “What do the Kentucky Academics Standards (KAS) for Social Studies Look Like in Practice?” series. To view past webinar recordings, slides and lesson plans, visit ourSocial Studies Webinarswebpage.
